HENRY FELDER JR.  – PATRIOT MILITIA FIGHTER

(1748  – 1803)

Henry Jr. had to grow up fast as the troubles with British rule of the colonies was heating up. He was twenty eight in 1776 when it became clear his father wanted him to fight with his militia under William “Danger” Thomson. He has likely learned how to manage his father’s store and attend to various duties on his farm. Over the years, Henry Felder Senior had bought more land and was very successful as the Foreman of the Grand Jury in Orangeburg. Helping his father create more local justice in government, Henry Jr. would have been expected to follow in his German-Swiss father’s footsteps and be ready to fight enemies of freedom.

Life in the backcountry was not easy and required learning to be a sharp-shooter if you wanted to get food for your family. When the war began, Henry Jr. was ready  and knew he had to be willing to die for the cause. After the king’s men had burned the family homestead and his younger brother was killed by the British while escaping capture, Henry Jr. had to console his father and help rebuild the house. He kept up the fight and lived to see freedom in America.
