Catherina was the resourceful second wife of Captain Henry Felder, Sr. Being a frontier wife, she was skilled in many ways to maintain a homestead and also birthed six children with Henry Felder. In the years leading to the war for independence, she and Felder’s sons learned to defend the home when Henry was in Charleston on merchant and war business. She encouraged her sons to shoot well as hunters and tend the farm. As war became inevitable, Felder recruited seven of his sons to fight with him in his militia.
In the film, All for Liberty, Catherine’s story covers her support for her husband until loyalists of the king loot and burn their home. She becomes terrified and asks Henry to stop as he is old and “…it is a young man’s war…” Felder refuses, responding “I cannot stop…it is liberty or the hangman’s noose.” But the story reveals what turns her heart back to the cause of liberty.
